What a Save!

Rocket League spills out of the screen and into my street

A suburban residential alleyway with houses on both sides, trash cans lined up along the sidewalk, and a clear blue sky overhead.

The Idea

After nearly a decade of playing Rocket League, I wanted to capture the chaos of a perfect save in the real world. A simple walk down a driveway became the stage for the game spilling over into everyday life.

A digitally edited image of a house with a blue sports car parked in front, a large robotic or armored hand on the left, and computer graphic overlay lines and connectors to the car, suggesting digital modeling or renovation.

The Creation

I filmed a clean plate on iPhone and tracked the shot in Blender, matching scale, light, and perspective. The Fennec was textured and composited with shadows, reflections, and motion blur. I also rebuilt the in-game chat and added my player tag to complete the effect.

A virtual scene with a blue car, a floating spherical robot, and a street sign on a checkered surface with a residential house in the background.

The Tools

Blender handled tracking and rendering. After Effects combined the layers. Photoshop shaped the textures, and I recreated the UI from scratch to match Rocket League’s style.

The Final Product

The finished clip feels like Rocket League colliding with reality. It resonated online and led directly to my commission for Discord’s ten-year commemorative post.
